The Greek word for love is "Agape" and they use the word "sex" for sex. But they have a word that comes somewhere in between. This word is "Eronda", sometimes translated as "Eronta", and is also a name given by the Greeks to the rare magical herb: Dittany of Crete.
The word Eronda refers to sexual love rather than the love (Agape) for a football team, chocolate cake or your Great Aunt Hilda. This refinement far better describes the sexual love or romantic love we feel for a love partner. The sexual desire we have for a partner is passionate, romantic and desirous. The love we have for a lover is immense - far stronger than any other love we may have. The love we have for children, pets and friends is different.
It's no coincidence that the Greek Goddess of love, Aphrodite, had a son she named Eros. Eros, (Cupid is his Roman counterpart) was the god of sexual love and this is where the term erotic is derived from. From the word Eros, Eronda was coined.
Eronda is also the name given to a rare, exotic herb. The herb is officially named Diktamos or Dittany of Crete. It only grows wild on the Greek Island of Crete - and nowhere else in the world!
The Cretans have used Dittany of Crete throughout the centuries and from ancient times - probably as far back as the Minoan era. The locals give it the name Eronda, to denote its aphrodisiac qualities.
Buying Dittany of Crete outside of Crete itself is very difficult as the Cretans and Greeks like to use the herb themselves. They use it as a tea or tisane, add it to alcohol as a tincture, and even use it in natural beauty products.
